The ashram was established in 1962 by Neem Karoli Baba himself. - Meaning of "Kainchi": The name "Kainchi" means "scissors" in Hindi, derived from the two sharp bends in the road near the ashram that resemble a pair of scissors. Miraculous Origins: According to legends, Neem Karoli Baba asked his devotees to build a temple here, and despite initial financial difficulties, the construction was miraculously completed. Growth & Popularity: Over time, the ashram became a major pilgrimage site, especially after Western devotees like Ram Dass (Richard Alpert) spread Maharaj-ji’s teachings globally.
